What is a word decoder?

A word decoder is a tool that helps children — particularly those with dyslexia — break unfamiliar words into smaller, more manageable parts. By splitting words into syllables, highlighting vowel patterns, and hearing how they sound out loud, children can decode words they would otherwise skip or guess at. This builds reading confidence gradually rather than overwhelming the child with whole words at once.

How this helps children with dyslexia

Dyslexia affects the way the brain processes written language — not intelligence, not understanding, not effort. Children with dyslexia often struggle to match written letters to the sounds they represent, which makes decoding unfamiliar words genuinely difficult. Breaking words into syllables gives the brain smaller chunks to work with. Hearing the word spoken aloud connects the written form to sounds the child already knows. Together these strategies make reading more accessible without relying on guesswork or memory alone.

How to use the word decoder

Type any word or paste a whole paragraph into the tool. The decoder breaks it into syllables, colour-codes the parts, and lets you hear it spoken aloud. You can adjust the font, letter spacing, and line height to find the display settings that work best for your child — some children with dyslexia find wider spacing or specific fonts significantly easier to read.

The tool works on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing is saved or stored. See all free Helpset tools →
