What is a task helper?

A task helper is a tool that breaks a task down into small, numbered steps so a child can follow it without needing to hold the whole process in their head at once. For autistic and ADHD children, the hardest part of any task is often getting started — not because they don't want to do it, but because the task feels overwhelming or unclear where to begin. Breaking it into steps removes that barrier.

Why ADHD and autistic children struggle with tasks

Executive function — the brain's ability to plan, organise and get started — works differently in autistic and ADHD children. A multi-step task like "get ready for school" or "tidy your room" can feel paralysing because the brain cannot easily sequence the steps automatically. Showing each step one at a time, with a clear beginning and a clear end, gives the child's brain the structure it needs to move forward.

How to use the Task Helper

Type the task and add as many steps as needed. The tool shows one step at a time so the child isn't overwhelmed by seeing the whole list. Each step can have a timer so the child knows exactly how long it should take. Tick each step off as it's done and watch the progress bar fill — that visual sense of progress is genuinely motivating for many children with ADHD.
